Water Filter Review

Seychelle Water Filter Review – Worth Your Money?

Seychelle is a prominent brand and a not inexpensive one when compared to other water pitchers and bottles. Is it worth the added expense? In this Seychelle water filter review, we’re going to look at the data and decide if these products are really worth spending the extra money on.

Seychelle is a fairly new brand in the water filter market. It was started in 1998 by Carl Palmer, and throughout this time, the brand has earned acclaim in the water filtration industry.

Their line includes many products, including two different filtering pitchers and many different on-the-go filtering bottle options. Let’s take a look at some of them:

Up First is the Seychelle pH2O Alkaline Water Pitcher

Seychelle pH2O Alkaline Water Pitcher

The pitcher, with two filters: $69.95

Two replacement filters: $49.95

This pitcher filter is a great option for those who want to make sure their water is as free from contaminants as possible.

Below is a chart compiled by Seychelle comparing their filters to those of their top three competitors.

As you can see, Seychelle has developed a comprehensive filter for removing contaminants from drinking water.

Products Table

Additionally, there are many health benefits reputed to be gained from drinking water that is high in alkalinity. This filter can increase your water’s pH level to up to 9.5, although Seychelle specifies that results can vary.

Seychelle Radiological Family Water Pitcher

It has proven effectiveness of up to 99.99% and filters out radiological chemicals, as the name states, as well as chlorine taste and odor.

As with the PH2O Alkaline filter pitcher, this filter pitcher is designed to ensure the user gets the best quality and taste from potentially contaminated drinking water. Let’s break down the specs on this filter:

Next On the List Are the Seychelle Filtration Bottles

The Seychelle Filtration Bottles

The bottles, with filters: $29.95-$34.95

Replacement filters: $16.95-$29.95

These bottles are meant to give you clean drinking water while on the go, so you don’t have to worry about aging pipes or municipal contaminants entering your drinking water. As with other Seychelle products, they aren’t meant for use with river or well water, but when you are out and about and need to refill your water bottle, you can have peace of mind that you are ingesting clean water.

First Up, the Standard:

This comes in a 28 oz fliptop or 24 oz pull top. The filter has a 100-gallon capacity, approximately, as it depends on the water quality you are filtering.

Whe you buy the fliptop model, you have the option of switching out the standard filter to a different model, such as the advanced or radiological.

The bottles also come with a handy wrist strap that can be customized. This is a great little on-the-go filtering bottle, but customers have found that the straw is not durable and needs to be replaced and that it is not leakproof.

Consumers have stated that if the bottle tips more than 45 degrees, the water will splash out, so perhaps not the best choice for tossing in your bag.

Here Are the Specs on the Standard Filter:

  • Fliptop bottle holds 28 oz of filtered water
  • Pull top bottle holds 24 oz of filtered water
  • Fliptop bottle filters are interchangeable
  • Standard filter capacity is up to 100 gallons
  • Standard filter removes up to 99.99% of contaminants, including chlorine, sediment, dirt, VOC’s such as DDT, dissolved solids such as copper, zinc, aluminium, mercury, lead
  • Removes up to 90% of fluoride
  • Bottle is made of FDA approved, low density, non-leaching plastic
  • Customizable wrist strap
  • Standard suitable only for treated water
  • Not suitable for lake or well water

Here are the specs for the Advanced Filter:

  • Fliptop bottle holds 28 oz of filtered water
  • Pulltop bottle holds 24 oz of filtered water
  • Fliptop bottle filters are interchangeable
  • Advanced filter capacity is up to 100 gallons, depending on the quality of the water being filtered
  • Advanced filter can be used with chlorinated water
  • Advanced filter can be used with outside sources of water such as lakes and rivers
  • Can be used during natural disasters on water of unknown quality

  • Can be used during natural disasters on water of unknown quality

  • Radiological filter removes up to 99.99% of contaminants, including chlorine, sediment, dirt, VOC’s such as DDT, dissolved solids such as copper, zinc, aluminium, mercury, lead
  • Removes up to 90% of fluoride
  • Bottle is made of FDA approved, low density, non-leaching plastic
  • Customizable wrist strap

Seychelle also offers its pH2O filter in the fliptop bottle. This has all the benefits of a pH2O water pitcher filtration system, just in a smaller format. The pH2O is designed to help your body maintain a healthy pH level while filtering common contaminants from drinking water. There are many purported health benefits to ingesting water with a higher alkalinity level, and

the pH2O filter can increase water alkalinity up to 9.5 pH, although a disclaimer may vary.

Here Are the Specs on the Seychelle pH2O Fliptop Bottle Filter:

  • 28 oz water bottle
  • FDA approved, low density, non-leaching plastic
  • Removes up to 90% of fluoride
  • pH2O filter Removes up to 99.99% of contaminants, including chlorine, sediment, dirt, VOC’s such as DDT, dissolved solids such as copper, zinc, aluminium, mercury, lead

  • Filter life is approximately 150 gallons
  • Filter is only to be used on chlorinated, municipal water as it does not remove giardia, cryptosporidium, viruses, bacteria
  • Not suitable for saltwater

Seychelle also offers a number of options in the form of drinking straws that are perfect for the camping or outdoors enthusiast or emergency or disaster preparedness. These straws are lightweight and fit into pockets or backpacks easily. Filter capacity is 25 gallons.

All Seychelle products come with a 90-day guarantee.

Customer Reviews

Customer reviews should always be taken with a grain of salt, as there are always chances that the product was stored or used improperly. Additionally, it’s usually only a small percentage of consumers who will actually take the time to write and post a review. They generally feel the most passionately positive or negative about the product.

Positive Reviews

  • Multiple reviewers have used their Seychelle products, some donated by the company itself, in charitable medical or rescue missions. One reviewer writes that they used the Seychelle filters to remove water-borne pathogens such as Giardia and E. coli from water in a Venezuelan community. The health of the population being treated improved exponentially.
  • Another reviewer describes supplying Seychelle filter bottles to a mission group whose filtration system had failed. They used one Seychelle water bottle to filter two weeks’ worth of water for ten people.
  • Out of 268 ratings in the last 12 months on amazon.com, 94% were positive. Most reviewers were very happy with the water’s taste and that they only had to change the water filter every six months.

Negative Reviews

  • In one Amazon Seychelle water filter review, a man took his new filter bottles on a trip to the Dominican Republic and states that he and his girlfriend still got sick. After they got back, he saw small bubbles forming around the straw where there should be an airtight seal.
  • Many of the reviewers give the Seychelle water bottles one-star complaint of leakages, with one reviewer stating that more water comes out at the cup’s base than the straw.
  • Another Seychelle water filter review stated that the bottle not only leaks, but the filter also gives the water a bad taste and suspects plastic is leaching into the water, despite the company’s claim of leach-free plastic. This sentiment is echoed in more than one review. Additionally, the reviewer states that the straw is difficult to drink from.

The Final Say

After sifting through all the information and consumer reviews, I can say that the bottle design more than likely needs some improvement, as many found it difficult or unpleasant to drink from, and it does leak. The filtration system itself, however, is a high-quality system, with many different options to choose from.

Seychelle is a trusted name, but there is always the possibility of a filter or bottle/pitcher malfunctioning, so you should test your equipment (as with all equipment) before you actually need it, especially if you are planning on using it for emergency preparedness or drinking water of unknown quality or origins.

Another issue to be aware of is that Seychelle filtered water bottles cannot be used for saltwater, so if you are using a salt-based water softening system in your home, you cannot use a Seychelle filter.

The water filter pitcher and bottles themselves are not overly expensive, but the replacement filters cost almost as much as the initial system. Thankfully, the filters are high capacity and don’t need to be replaced often unless the quality of water you are filtering is extremely low.
